SP Energy Networks is inviting feedback on two projects to enhance the electricity transmission network in South Lanarkshire, forming part of its multi-billion-pound programme to modernise the grid. The proposals are designed to unlock regional economic growth, meet rising electricity demand and secure a reliable power supply for years to come.
One scheme – the Clydesmill to Strathaven substation overhead lines project – would upgrade existing lines between Clydesmill substation in Cambuslang and Strathaven substation, west of Hamilton. The work includes a new overhead line tower at each substation, a new underground cable, and an extension to Strathaven substation.
A separate project, already through an earlier public consultation, proposes extending Clydesmill substation and upgrading the existing overhead line to Denny North substation.
Garry Hemmings, Project Manager for SP Energy Networks, said: "We're investing billions in our grid to ensure our customers and communities benefit from a network that meets their needs as demand for electricity increases and more people make the switch to the likes of electric vehicles, heat pumps and solar panels. So, it's vital that those customers and communities have the opportunity to let us know what they think – that's exactly what this consultation is designed to do.
"For the Clydesmill substation project, we will be sharing the final project design, taking account of all the feedback received to date, while we'll be revealing our plans for the Clydesmill to Strathaven substation upgrade for the first time."
Two community drop-in events will be held at the start of next month: Monday 2 November 2026, 3pm–7pm, Halfway Community Hub, Cambuslang, G72 7PJ (Clydesmill Substation Extension application presentation / Clydesmill to Strathaven Upgrade Project), and Tuesday 3 November 2026, 3pm–7pm, Hillhouse & Earnock Community Centre, 121 Hillhouse Rd, Hamilton, ML3 9TX (Clydesmill to Strathaven Upgrade Project).
Gary added: "Consultation is a crucial part of developing our plans and we encourage residents to come along, meet the team, hear more about the plans and ask questions about the projects."
The consultation period closes on Tuesday 1 December 2026.
