Argyll and Bute Harbour Board has endorsed plans to safeguard the long-term future of Carradale Harbour, with measures designed to protect essential infrastructure, support local businesses and create new opportunities for harbour users.
Carradale Harbour is a key asset for the Kintyre community, underpinning commercial fishing, leisure activities and the wider local economy. Recent inspections confirmed many core facilities remain in good condition, including harbour lighting, safety equipment and navigation systems. The strategy will now prioritise investigating and addressing structural issues to ensure the harbour stays safe, resilient and fit for the future.
A phased programme will include specialist surveys, a technical options appraisal, detailed engineering design and, subject to funding, delivery of improvement works. This approach is intended to identify the most effective and sustainable solutions, maintain the harbour's infrastructure and reduce future maintenance needs.
The plan also encourages future development. Positive discussions with aquaculture company Mowi have produced an agreement in principle for new marine infrastructure, including a harbour pontoon for personnel craft that would also be available to local small boat owners. Proposed arrangements feature shared investment and maintenance, alongside participation from local user groups.
Councillor Ross Moreland, chair of the Harbour Board, said: "We have a strategy of planned development and improvements, alongside partnership working with Mowi. This combination offers a foundation for future sustainable use of the Harbour. The proposals are expected to strengthen Carradale Harbour's role as a key marine facility, supporting employment, economic activity and community life within Kintyre for years to come."
