Glasgow City Council has signed off the sale of land and sites in the three areas to enable more than 160 new homes, while also agreeing compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) to return three long-term empty flats to use as social housing.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Depute Leader and Convener for Housing and Development at Glasgow City Council, said: "Today's decisions by the council will bring a significant number of new homes to Glasgow by freeing up land and sites or bringing long-term empty homes back to productive use. At a time when new housing is needed more than ever, we will continue to do all that we can to boost the availability of housing in the city."
The council's Contracts & Property Committee approved the disposal of 0.22 acres of surplus land at 37–49 Dumbarton Road to Hegarty Investment Company Limited, owners of the adjoining land and public house, which intends to deliver build-to-rent homes on the site.
A second disposal covers the former Yoker Primary School site at 56 Craggan Drive, including the former school caretakers' bungalow at 54 Craggan Drive. The 3.28-acre plot will be transferred to Sanctuary Scotland Housing Association, which plans 33 affordable homes—a mix of flats and houses—with some for social rent.
The third decision enables Maryhill Housing Association to acquire 3.41 acres at Rothes Drive, Sandbank Street and Kilmun Street. This will support 138 new homes—68 affordable and 70 for private sale in partnership with a private sector company—alongside new public open space.
Separately, CPOs were agreed for three properties at 2/01, 1357 Gallowgate; G/01, 18 Dowanhill Street; and 49 Cairndow Court. These will be brought back into use as social housing, improving the condition of the stock. 'Back-to-back' agreements were approved with Parkhead Housing Association for the 1357 Gallowgate flat, Partick Housing Association for the 18 Dowanhill Street flat, and Cathcart and District Housing Association for the Cairndow Court property.
