George Square Road Closures Extended for Granite Sett Reconstruction Work

Construction News Image

The ongoing road closure on the south side of George Square, which encompasses the Queen Street and St Vincent Place junction, is set to be extended.

The area must stay completely closed to all vehicular traffic to accommodate the reconstruction of the southern carriageway using granite setts. Under an extended Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO), the current closure will now remain in effect until 29 November 2026. This extension ensures adequate time for the newly laid setts to cure properly before the road can be safely reopened to traffic.

As part of the traffic management measures, the suspension of the Ingram Street bus gate will stay in effect for the full duration of the road closure.

Motorists can continue to access St Vincent Place by travelling via Nelson Mandela Place, West George Street, and Anchor Lane. While the bus gate camera at Nelson Mandela Place will stay active, commercial vehicles will maintain permitted access throughout the closure period.

Anchor Lane will also continue operating in a southbound direction.

In addition, several surrounding streets will operate as two-way roads with no through access:

• Cochrane Street

• Hanover Street

• South Frederick Street

• Queen Street (north of Ingram Street)
