With demand for skilled demolition operatives and plant operators continuing to grow, apprenticeships remain a proven way for employers to develop a competent, safety-focused workforce for the future.
The National Construction College (NCC) delivers a 24-month Demolition Operative Apprenticeship created in partnership with industry. The programme equips apprentices with practical skills, technical knowledge and recognised credentials that prepare them to contribute effectively on site.
Demolition News recently visited NCC England East to explore the course and hear from the training team about developing the next generation of demolition professionals. A 10:10 video overview is available to watch on YouTube.
The apprenticeship covers core demolition competencies, including health and safety legislation; demolition procedures and methods; hand and power tools; soft strip and strip-out techniques; recycling and waste management; fuel and gas cutting operations; demolition planning; and lifting operations and demolition plant, including demolition robots and MEWPs.
This comprehensive scope helps apprentices build the knowledge, behaviours and practical capability needed to be effective from day one.
Apprentices work towards a Level 2 Demolition Operative qualification. They receive a Red CCDO Apprentice Card during training and, following successful completion of their End Point Assessment (EPA), progress to a Blue CCDO Demolition/Refurbishment Card. These industry-recognised milestones give employers confidence that apprentices are developing to nationally recognised standards while gaining valuable on-site experience.
Learning blends workplace experience with 18 weeks of face-to-face training delivered across the two-year programme. Progress is tracked via the Aptem learning platform and supported by regular reviews with Apprenticeship Development Coaches, helping both employers and apprentices stay on course.
Recruiting a demolition apprentice enables employers to develop talent tailored to their business needs; address current and future skills gaps; build a pipeline of qualified operatives; strengthen workforce capability and productivity; and support long-term growth.
Employers can find out more by visiting the course page or joining upcoming Demolition Apprenticeship Webinars on 13 October (11am–11.45am) and 11 November (4pm–4.45pm).
