Construction of a new active travel route between Bridge of Allan and Stirling will start on Monday 5 October 2026, with the opening phase focused on Keir Street and scheduled to last 12 weeks.
The scheme will run from the junction of Keir Street and Fountain Road in Bridge of Allan to the Walk, Cycle, Live Stirling infrastructure on Airthrey Road at the Hillfoots Road junction, near the University of Stirling. Funded through Transport Scotland's Active Travel Infrastructure Fund, the project is due for completion in late autumn 2027 and was shaped by a public consultation held in 2025.
On Keir Street, the plans introduce traffic-calming features and surface changes to discourage speeding and reinforce the Highway Code at junctions. There will be no cycle lanes or narrowing of the carriageway on Keir Street, and on-street parking will be retained.
Temporary signs are in place and letters have been issued to residents and businesses close to Keir Street with details of temporary local road closures and traffic management arrangements to protect road users, pedestrians and workers. With Cornton Road currently operating under temporary traffic lights during phases of the Bridge of Allan Flood Protection Scheme, the Keir Street works will be carefully coordinated to minimise disruption.
Environment, Transport and Net Zero Convener Cllr Alasdair Tollemache said: "We were delighted to secure funding from Transport Scotland for this important project which will connect Bridge of Allan to Stirling along safe and accessible active travel routes.
"It will give residents and visitors the option to walk or cycle to reach work, schools, parks, shops, university or college, public transport hubs, attractions and other destinations.
"The new infrastructure will deliver a wide range of environmental, social and economic benefits and it will link to other current and planned active routes, supporting our wider efforts to create an integrated public transport and active travel network.
"The design of the route including on Keir Street has been informed by feedback we received in surveys to help it meet the needs of local communities. Residents have also shared concerns for some time about excess speeding on Keir Street.
"We will continue to engage with residents and business throughout the works and aim to minimise disruption as much as possible."
Improvements on Keir Street include widening existing footpaths to improve accessibility, constructing raised sections of road to create a safer, continuous pedestrian route, installing new roadside drainage, and updating traffic and pedestrian signage and road markings.
Vehicle access to homes and businesses will be maintained where possible, with advance notice of any temporary restrictions. Access for emergency services, business deliveries, refuse collection and residents will be accommodated throughout the works.
