In the 12 months to the end of June 2026, just over 17,000 new homes were completed and around 15,500 were started. Compared with the previous year, completions fell by 11% and starts by 2%. Completions were at their lowest level since 2015, while starts were the lowest since 2013.

The private sector delivered nearly 13,600 completions and began around 11,800 homes. Year on year, completions declined by 7% and starts by 8%, with starts at their lowest since 2013.

The social sector completed close to 3,500 homes and started around 3,700. Completions dropped 25% year on year, while starts rose 26% from a record-low base the previous year. Social sector completions were the lowest since 2007.

Across the Affordable Housing Supply Programme (AHSP) in the year to June 2026, there were roughly 6,600 approvals, 7,100 starts and 6,800 completions.

Annual increases were recorded for approvals (up 42%) and starts (up 34%), though both rose from low levels reported the year before.

By June 2026, just over 36,500 homes had been delivered towards the target of 110,000 affordable homes by 2032 — 77% for social rent, 14% for affordable rent, and 8% for affordable home ownership.
