A new eight-lane running track has officially opened at Wishaw Sports Centre, billed as a major boost for athletics and everyday activity in the town.

The track has been completely resurfaced with a high-performance Conipur technical sports surface, creating a modern venue for training, competition and community events.

It will act as a dedicated base for Motherwell Athletics Club and Law and District Athletic Club, while also supporting council athletics camps, local school meets and wider community activities.

The investment also brings significant upgrades to the specialist throwing and high jump areas, positioning Wishaw to attract higher-level competitions across multiple disciplines.

The £500,000 track works are part of a wider £10 million investment in leisure, cultural and community facilities across North Lanarkshire, aimed at creating modern spaces for residents.

Across the area, eight pitches and four pavilions will be resurfaced or upgraded, with improvements planned at schools and community facilities in Cumbernauld, Coatbridge, Motherwell, Wishaw, Shotts and Airdrie.

Pavilions at Cleland, Harthill, West End in Bellshill and Gartferry/Moodiesburn are included in the programme, while additional funding will also support improvements to town centres, parks and open spaces.
