SP Energy Networks is investing £2.5 million to upgrade the electricity network in Knutsford, boosting capacity to accommodate growing demand as homes and businesses adopt electric vehicles, solar panels and heat pumps.

The first phase begins on Monday 14 September with the installation of cable ducts on Chelford Road and at the Legh Road junction. This will require some access restrictions on Leycester Road and Parkfield Road. This stage is scheduled to run until mid-November.

In total, the project will deliver 2.5km of new underground cabling alongside a new substation to strengthen the local grid and improve resilience for the years ahead.

The works will be carried out by Warrington-based contractor Opus, which employs around 280 people locally.

The initial traffic management will include the temporary closure of the Legh Road and Chelford Road junction between 14–20 September. Temporary traffic lights will also operate on a section of Chelford Road between the Gough Lane roundabout and the Legh Arms pub from 17 September to 11 November. During this period, access to Leycester Road and Parkfield Road will be limited to residents and key services.
