Argyll and Bute Council has commissioned Ramboll and specialist marine divers to examine the historic structure as part of joint plans with the Helensburgh Pier Company to reopen the pier safely.

The council has taken another step in supporting the Helensburgh Pier Company’s efforts to return the town’s historic pier to public use.

Engineers from consultancy Ramboll have been appointed to carry out a comprehensive principal inspection of Helensburgh Pier.

Working alongside specialist divers from Shearwater Marine Services, who will undertake an underwater survey, Ramboll will deliver a detailed assessment of the pier’s condition both above and below the waterline.

The findings will provide the council and the charity with up-to-date information on the structure, helping to identify potential repairs, future investment needs and options for the pier’s long-term future. The survey will also improve understanding of key elements of the pier's structural condition, including timber components, foundations and berthing infrastructure.

This inspection is one of the actions required before the pier can reopen safely. In parallel, the charity and the council are working on a lease that the charity could take on to seek external funding for the repairs needed to lift the closure notice and enable a safe reopening.

Survey activity is expected to take place in October, with dive teams and inspection personnel working on and around the pier. Members of the public are asked to follow temporary safety measures and keep clear of work areas while the surveys are underway.
