Works will take place on St Mary's Street for around six months from Monday 21 September as the City of Edinburgh Council begins a bespoke scheme to reinstate the street's historic character and condition.

The project will fully reconstruct the carriageway, with traditional stone setts lifted and re-laid. It will also upgrade the pedestrian crossing at Boyd’s Entry, alongside improvements to kerbs and pavements. Infrastructure changes include better local drainage, refreshed road markings and the removal of redundant signage and other pavement clutter.

To carry out the upgrades, no through traffic will be permitted on St Mary’s Street for the duration of the works. Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles, pedestrians, residents, businesses and deliveries.

Work is scheduled between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, though some tasks may be undertaken outside these hours to minimise disruption or for safety reasons.

The scheme will be delivered in three phases, with temporary traffic management adjusted at each stage. Measures may include short-term road closures or local lane restrictions, signed diversion routes, temporary parking suspensions and altered.
