Graduate Building Surveyor David McMillan has been shortlisted for the CIOB Scotland Graduate of the Year Award 2026 after being nominated by Allied Surveyors Scotland.
The nomination recognises his academic performance, professional progression, and dedication to the wider surveying sector. Judges for the award highlighted that competition was "tougher than ever" for this year's accolades.
David's path into the sector started at age 14 through hands-on construction experience working with his father. At 15, he earned an unconditional offer to study Building Surveying at Glasgow Caledonian University, starting the degree program at 16.
He maintained practical work alongside his university studies and initial outreach to Allied Surveyors Scotland at age 16 led to a Trainee Building Surveyor position in June 2024. He subsequently graduated with First Class Honours before stepping into his current role as Graduate Building Surveyor.
"David's commitment extends beyond his day-to-day role. His final-year dissertation explored the age and gender imbalance within surveying, including research with industry professionals and secondary school pupils," explains Allied Surveyors Scotland's director of operations, Kevin Keane.
"He is now putting his findings into action by taking part in a mentoring initiative at his former school, helping young people understand the career opportunities available within the built environment."
David has also been appointed to the Allied Surveyors Scotland Associate Board, focusing on staff engagement, career development, and talent recruitment. At age 20, he combines six years of practical industry experience with his First Class Honours degree.
The winner will be announced at the CIOB Scotland Awards lunch on Friday 9 October 2026 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Glasgow.
