Milton’s Former Derelict Plot Becomes Discovery Wood As First Phase Completes

Construction News Image

Phase one of a project to turn a long-vacant, derelict site in central Milton into a new discovery wood has opened paths, climbing boulders and an outdoor teaching circle.

Visitors can now follow a connected path network through the park, with routes leading to new climbing boulders. The primary school opposite the site has direct access to an outdoor classroom area for lessons and activities.

The Green Action Trust delivered the scheme on behalf of Glasgow City Council, supported by more than £650,000 from the Scottish Government's Vacant & Derelict Land Investment Programme.

Community engagement included a walkover with local groups and residents, and the design developed from work by Glasgow's Liveable Neighbourhoods with schools and community organisations.

Consultation highlighted priorities such as safer routes to school, additional seating, measures to deter dangerous parking, and improved tidiness with ongoing maintenance. The land had been on the council's Vacant and Derelict Land register and was previously associated with antisocial behaviour.

Initial works began with a tree condition and risk assessment, followed by the removal of unsafe trees and clearance of dense scrub. These steps have created clear desire lines, improved visibility and accessibility, and made the space more welcoming.

The landscape design sets out a network of paths linking the park to surrounding streets, with benches at key viewpoints, climbing boulders and a teaching circle. Construction was carried out by Mackenzie Construction.

An area of butterfly orchids identified during a Phase 1 habitat survey was safeguarded throughout the build.

Next, natural play features will be installed across the 3.5-hectare site in late autumn.

The project supports Glasgow's Open Space Strategy, aiming to ensure people can reach high-quality, multifunctional green space within a short walk of home.
