Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will restart works on the Cornwall Street and Kirkwood Street footbridges spanning the M8 between Junctions 21 and 23 (Kinning Park and Ibrox), south-west of Glasgow city centre, from Monday 10 August 2026.

The bridge spans were removed in summer 2024 and refurbished off site; this phase readies the route for reinstating the spans in autumn/winter 2026/27.

To support site re‑mobilisation, weekday overnight traffic management will operate from 8pm to 6am during the following windows: Monday 10 August to 6am Saturday 15 August 2026; Monday 17 August to 6am Saturday 22 August 2026; and Monday 24 August to 6am Saturday 29 August 2026.

Measures include a closure of the M8 Junction 21 (westbound) Carnoustie Street on‑slip, with traffic diverted via Scotland Street to the M8 westbound on‑slip at Seaward Street. The westbound link from the M74 Junction 1 to the M8 Junction 22 will also close, with the same diversion in place. On the M8 westbound between Junctions 22 and 23, a nearside and adjacent lane closure will apply, transitioning to an offside lane closure before Junction 23. Eastbound between Junctions 24 and 22, an offside and adjacent lane will be closed. Signed diversion routes will be provided where required.

The refurbishment programme aims to extend the life of these approximately 50‑year‑old structures and will include waterproofing and resurfacing of the bridge decks; replacement of expansion joints and pedestrian parapets; concrete repairs with cathodic corrosion protection; structural strengthening at half‑joint locations; bearing replacements; vehicle restraint system upgrades; and drainage improvements.

Both footbridges have remained closed to pedestrians and cyclists since summer 2024 following removal of the spans. Diversions via the nearby Percy Street and Beech Avenue footbridges will stay in place until the refurbished structures are reinstated. Reinstallation of the spans is currently scheduled for November 2026, with the crossings expected to reopen to pedestrians in February 2027.

The works have been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, Glasgow City Council and the emergency services. All activities are weather dependent and may be postponed or rescheduled if conditions are unsuitable.
