East Dunbartonshire Council has approved its Climate Action Plan (CAP) 2026–2040 after a period of evidence gathering and engagement. Public consultation ran from October to December 2025, featuring online surveys, drop-in sessions, and events in schools and with community groups across the area.

Attention now turns to delivering the plan and building on the Council's track record in lowering emissions, enhancing resilience to climate impacts and creating wider benefits for communities.

The CAP sets three core goals: achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2036 for the Council's direct operations and purchased energy; reaching net zero by 2045 for all remaining emissions, including those across the wider East Dunbartonshire area; and improving local resilience to the continuing effects of climate change.

Climate change is no longer a distant threat – it is reshaping Scotland's environment now. Councillor Gordan Low, Leader of East Dunbartonshire Council, said: "He growing severity of climate change impacts, which are already visible in our communities, underscores the urgent need for large-scale action.

"East Dunbartonshire is playing its part through the CAP – a strategic roadmap to reduce emissions, build resilience and deliver co-benefits for our communities.

"Many thanks to everyone who took part in the consultation. Your responses and suggestions helped to inform and shape the final CAP."

The plan is organised around eight themes: transport; buildings and heat decarbonisation; sustainable communities; the natural environment; consumption and waste; business and the economy; supply chains, investment and digital infrastructure; and food and agriculture.

To support delivery, the Council is creating a Community Climate Change Forum and a Youth Climate Change Forum. The first community forum will take place online on Monday 10 August 2026, 6pm–7.30pm, with residents and local groups encouraged to join.
