Sumburgh-based Ness Engineering is constructing a new facility at its current site in Shetland to address a rising demand for its services and lay the groundwork for future development.

The capital expansion and subsequent job creation are being backed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), which has awarded the company up to £172,234 in funding. Ness Engineering provides a wide variety of skilled engineering services—such as electrical, mechanical, and general engineering—in addition to site services like temporary lighting, on-site power generation, and welfare units. The company currently has a workforce of 46 employees, which includes apprentices situated throughout Shetland.

The new building will allow the business to consolidate its operations by providing extra workshop, storage, and yard space. This added capacity will accommodate the firm's expanding plant, equipment, and welfare unit fleet, while enabling existing buildings to be repurposed into upgraded office accommodation. As a consequence of this development, Ness Engineering will expand its primary business activities, resulting in the creation of a new job role and an apprentice position.

In addition to the construction project, the company has secured an additional £18,580 in support from HIE to implement a new technology solution. This software is designed to boost internal productivity and efficiency, helping the company manage an increasing volume of administrative duties by integrating seamlessly with its current accountancy setup.
