Perth and Kinross Council has joined forces with Skills Development Scotland, Developing the Young Workforce Tay Cities, and UHI Perth to launch the 2026 Apprentice Awards. The nominations period officially opened on Monday 11 May and will remain open until Friday 19 June 2026.

The awards serve to recognise the significant impact of apprenticeships on individual lives, business growth, and the local economy. Furthermore, the regional competition aims to encourage high-quality local entries for the upcoming national Scottish Apprenticeship Awards.

The category list for this year includes:

• Foundation Apprentice of the Year

• Modern Apprentice (SCQF Level 5) of the Year

• Modern Apprentice (SCQF Level 6+) of the Year

• Graduate Apprentice of the Year

• Apprentice Mentor of the Year

• Apprentice Employer of the Year

The apprenticeship sector in the region is currently exhibiting strong performance. According to data from Skills Development Scotland, there were 955 Modern Apprentices in training as of September 2025. The area also boasts a high achievement rate of 79.6%, highlighting the effectiveness of local training and partnership initiatives.

Thomas Glen, Chief Executive of Perth and Kinross Council, noted the council's own experience with the programme: "As a major local employer, we have seen for ourselves the importance and impact of Modern Apprenticeships in looking to the future of the organisation and how we can provide real opportunities for young people to learn and earn, and progress their skills and experience in a meaningful way. Last year's inaugural Apprentice Awards highlighted the diversity of talented Modern Apprentices in many different economic sectors of Perth and Kinross, and I very much look forward to this year's celebration of apprentices and employers committed to making a difference."

The value of the scheme was further echoed by Maxine Scott of Skills Development Scotland, who stated that apprenticeships provide essential skills that meet both current and future industry demands. Lesley English of DYW Tay Cities emphasized that celebrating these successes inspires new talent and showcases the investment local businesses make in their staff.

The evolution of the event reflects the growing profile and impact of the awards across the region. Strong partnership working remains at the heart of this initiative, and we are proud to celebrate the achievements of apprentices and employers who are helping to build a skilled, future ready workforce. Apprenticeships play a vital role in developing talent, strengthening local businesses and supporting inclusive economic growth throughout Perth and Kinross."

The winners will be revealed during a special celebration event scheduled for early September. Interested parties can find nomination forms for apprentices, mentors, and employers online, while sponsorship enquiries are being directed to the Perth and Kinross Council.
