South Ayrshire councillors will review a comprehensive Road Improvement Plan at the Cabinet meeting on 28 April.

If approved, £5.785 million would be invested across the area’s carriageways, footways, street lighting, bridges, coastal defences and wider transport infrastructure.

Developed by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance (ARA), the plan sets out a detailed programme of works for 2026 and early 2027.

It covers resurfacing and road reconstruction, upgrades to LED street lighting, renewal of traffic signals, active travel improvements, and structural works to bridges and harbours.

The report emphasises that the transport network is among the council’s most valuable assets, valuing the road carriageway alone at £1.6 billion, and says maintaining and improving the network is vital to economic wellbeing and regeneration.

Key allocations for 2026/27 include:

• £70,000 for LED street lighting replacements

• £168,750 for underground street lighting cable replacement

• £70,000 for traffic signal renewals, the first year of an 11‑year rolling programme

• £115,764 for coastal change adaptation

• £60,000 for structural assessment of Ayr South Pier

• £2.65m for the carriageway resurfacing programme

The plan also identifies anticipated external funding for active travel, road safety and bus infrastructure, with bids submitted to Transport Scotland and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.

Kevin Braidwood, Depute Chief Executive and Director of Housing, Operations and Development for South Ayrshire Council said: "If approved, this investment underlines our continued commitment to maintaining safe, reliable and high‑quality roads and infrastructure for residents, businesses and visitors.

"The 2026/27 programme supports active travel, strengthens our coastal resilience and ensures our communities can move around safely and efficiently. This improvement plan will not only improve day‑to‑day journeys but also supports long‑term economic growth across South Ayrshire."

Subject to approval, ARA will begin preparations to deliver the programme, with full engagement undertaken in line with established consultation protocols.

Progress will be reported to the Ayrshire Shared Services Joint Committee throughout the year.
