To mark Earth Day, SP Energy Networks has detailed the advancements made within its comprehensive sustainability strategy. As a critical player in the UK's shift toward a more secure and green energy system, the operator is focusing its efforts on five core pillars to ensure environmental protection for future generations.
• Climate Action and Net Zero Goals
The company is working toward a science-based target of achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. A significant milestone in this effort is the transition to 100% UK-based renewable electricity across the majority of its substations and buildings. Since the beginning of the RIIO-T2 period, this move has resulted in an estimated carbon saving of 67,992 tCO₂.
• Biodiversity and Nature Protection
SP Energy Networks aims to become "Nature Positive" by 2030. During the current T2 period, the operator has enhanced biodiversity across more than 348 hectares of peatland, woodland, and meadow creation projects. Working with local environmental partners, the company has also issued 16 community grant donations to support habitat restoration.
• Waste Reduction and the Circular Economy
With the ambition of becoming a zero-waste business by 2040, the company has maintained a landfill diversion rate of over 95%. The implementation of the Qflow system has improved waste reporting accuracy, allowing for better identification of waste hotspots. Other initiatives include enhanced soil management processes and the introduction of PPE recycling to keep materials in use.
• Supply Chain Standards
The operator is collaborating with its suppliers to elevate environmental standards through a strategic action plan leading to 2035. This includes providing targeted training on waste consignment and utilizing its Supply Chain Sustainability School Gold Membership to help partners adopt low-carbon practices and improve transparency in carbon reporting.
• Community Support and Inclusive Transition
To ensure the transition to Net Zero is equitable, SP Energy Networks has provided over 22,700 fuel poverty support services and reached 99% of customers on its Priority Services Register. Furthermore, 27 community projects have received backing via the Net Zero Fund, while new apprenticeship and training programmes have been established to expand fair work opportunities within the energy sector.
