BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will undertake essential maintenance on the A9 Helmsdale River Bridge from Tuesday 5 May to Friday 29 May 2026. The programme includes replacing a bridge expansion joint and carrying out a planned investigation of the bridge deck to ensure continued safe operation.

Temporary two-way traffic signals will be in place throughout, reducing the bridge to a single lane. Emergency services will be able to pass through the works at all times.

Richard Cook, BEAR Scotland's North West Bridges Manager said: "These essential works will help ensure the continued safe operation of Helmsdale River Bridge by addressing general age-related wear and the inspection will allow us to better understand the condition of the structure.

"The traffic management is necessary to protect both our workforce and road users while these works are carried out.

"We thank road users and the local community for their patience while we complete these works."

All activities are weather dependent and may be postponed or cancelled in the event of adverse conditions.
