Dundee City Council is set to receive an update on the advancement of two pivotal climate strategies aimed at achieving long-term sustainability for the city.
The latest figures regarding the Net Zero Transition Plan 2024-2030 reveal that the Council successfully reduced its total carbon emissions by approximately four percent during the 2024/25 reporting period. This contribute to a significant 55% cumulative reduction since emission tracking first commenced. Officials attributed the recent decline to a combination of lower energy consumption across the Council's estate and enhanced performance across the local authority fleet.
In addition to operational efficiencies, the Council reported progress in areas including waste management, procurement, transport, and community engagement.
Councillors will also be briefed on the Local Heat and Energy Efficiency Strategy (LHEES). This annual progress report details initial measures taken to improve energy efficiency, tackle fuel poverty, and decarbonise heating systems in buildings. Notable successes in this sector include the formation of the Dundee Social Housing Net Zero Forum—a partnership with Registered Social Landlords—and ongoing collaboration with NHS Tayside, local universities, and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN).
The report further highlights advancements in heat network studies, which are currently exploring technical delivery models supported by external funding. Despite these gains, the Council noted that challenges remains, particularly regarding the need for sustained funding and the alignment of national programmes to facilitate larger-scale delivery.
Climate, Net Zero & Environment Committee Convener Cllr Heather Anderson said: "The scale of the challenge facing us all is considerable and these strategies play an important role in guiding us towards our long-term sustainable goals.
"In the last year, progress has been made through the publishing of key documents such as the Local Area Energy Plan, the ongoing expansion of electric fleet vehicles, the completion of the Green Transport Hub and more community-led climate action through the Dundee Climate Fund.
"In order to achieve Net Zero and continue this momentum, the Council remains committed to the ongoing exploration of funding opportunities to support the implementation of future key large-scale actions."
Both progress reports are scheduled for consideration by the Climate, Net Zero & Environment Committee during its meeting today, Monday, 20th April.
