McTaggart Construction has handed over 48 energy‑efficient affordable homes at Hebrides Drive in Dundee, marking a further step in the regeneration of the Mill O' Mains estate.
Delivered for client Home Group in partnership with ORA Architects and Dundee City Council, the £9.34 million project converts a brownfield plot into a mixed‑tenure neighbourhood and forms a key element of the area's masterplan.
The development provides a mix of two, three and four‑bedroom houses, cottage flats and flatted homes, built to Housing for Varying Needs standards and the Secured by Design Gold standard. A dedicated supported living block commissioned by Dundee City Council widens who the scheme can serve and underlines its inclusive approach.
Community benefits were embedded throughout delivery. An early meet‑the‑buyer event opened up opportunities for local firms, resulting in 11 contracts awarded to local businesses, including nine local contractors. Four local jobs were created directly, with a further two via sub‑contracting partners, and six local apprentices gained on‑site experience. More than 50% of the workforce travelled fewer than 15 miles to site, and 12 hours of education and employability support were provided through Developing the Young Workforce initiatives.
Beyond the 48 new homes, improvements to the wider Mill O' Mains estate include upgraded streets, safer pedestrian routes and new landscaped green spaces. The build has also secured independent recognition with two Premier Guarantee awards.
Janice Russell, Managing Director of McTaggart Construction, commented: "Mill O' Mains is a great example of what can be achieved when the right partners come together around a shared ambition. We're proud to have delivered 48 high-quality homes that will make a real difference to residents and the wider community in Dundee, and to have done so in a way that created genuine local opportunity throughout the construction process."
Bryony Willett, Director of Home Group Scotland said: "We are incredibly proud of our work regenerating the Mill O' Mains estate in Dundee, and these new affordable homes are an important step. We know the difference these homes will make for our customers and the community.
"This project has been about more than just building new homes too, with the construction work having helped create jobs locally and the energy efficient design making sure our customers' new homes remain warm, safe and fit for the future."
Gary Caudrey at ORA Architects said: "Projects like Mill O' Mains are a compelling example of how thoughtful design can play a central role in successful regeneration. This development brings together a variety of house types and tenures, creating a cohesive neighbourhood with sustainability at its core.
"It has been fantastic to be part of this project and put a people-focused approach to housing at the forefront. Working closely with McTaggart Construction, Home Group and the extended Design Team, our initial vision has been brought to life, creating a place where people can feel at home and part of a community for years to come."
