Wallace Whittle, an independent MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) and sustainability consultancy, is marking the fifth anniversary of its return to UK ownership. The milestone follows a successful management buy-out from German group TÜV SÜD in 2021, which allowed the firm to reclaim its independent status and accelerate its expansion strategy.
In the five years since the buy-out, the Scottish-headquartered business has undergone a significant transformation. The team has grown from 80 to more than 200 specialists, while turnover has increased from £8m to £20m. This growth has been accompanied by an expanded geographic footprint, with a transition from a regional player to a national consultancy through new or expanded offices in Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester, and London.
Managing Director Allan McGill, who joined the firm as a trainee in 1995, said: "It's an incredibly proud moment, celebrating five years of outstanding growth and marking our 62 years of history. Our goal with the buy-out was to return to what Wallace Whittle is at its core, while evolving how we operate in a modern market. Today, we think like a major player but we act with the agility and personal touch of a boutique consultancy."
A central pillar of the firm's recent success is the Wallace Whittle Academy, launched in 2022 to address the industry-wide skills shortage. The firm has invested several million pounds into the academy, allowing senior staff to transition into mentorship roles. To ensure long-term talent development, the head office subsidises the cost of staff aged under 25 for all regional branches, removing local budget constraints on hiring young engineers.
The firm's evolution has also included significant investment in office infrastructure and the enhancement of its specialist sustainability services. By bringing more expertise in-house, the consultancy has reduced its reliance on outsourcing for complex, high-value projects.
Allan McGill added: "As we look towards 2030, our focus remains on staying a people-first, quality-driven business, while continuing to expand our UK-wide presence. We are positioning ourselves for the future, ensuring that as we scale, we never lose the excellence that the 1964 founders established."
To celebrate the anniversary, Wallace Whittle will host a series of staff and client events throughout the year, focusing on the integration of its national team and acknowledging the employees who have driven this period of change.
