Consultation Launched On Future Of Brae Community Football Pitch

Shetland Islands Council is calling for community input regarding the proposed replacement of the Brae community football pitch. The site of the current grass pitch has been identified as the preferred location for the construction of the new Brae Campus buildings, necessitating a high-quality alternative for local sports users.

Following initial engagement with stakeholders, two distinct options for a replacement pitch were presented to elected members on 25 March. The Council has now agreed to a formal options appraisal to evaluate these alternatives in greater depth. The final decision on which option to progress will be informed by the results of this appraisal and community feedback.

The existing grass pitch is a vital asset as the only football field in the North Mainland and serves as the home ground for Delting Football Club. Any new facility must meet strict competitive football standards while continuing to serve the wider community. Additionally, the project team noted that because no current synthetic surface meets the combined performance requirements of both FIFA and the International Hockey Federation (FIH), pitches must remain designated for either football or hockey, rather than a shared multi-sport surface.

The feedback gathered will be analysed and presented in a report to Councillors. This process is a key step toward the Full Business Case for the Brae Campus, which is expected to undergo final consideration by the Council in early 2027.
