The City of Dunfermline Area Committee has officially designated the name "Bruce Square" for the new public space situated in the heart of the city. The development has been a long-term priority for the region, aimed at enhancing the city centre's aesthetic appeal and fostering a stronger sense of local identity.
The naming process involved significant community input, with the final selection determined by a group of 96 local young people. Bruce Square emerged as the preferred choice due to its consistent support and its deep historical connections to Dunfermline’s heritage.
Once completed, the square will serve as a versatile public area designed to host community activities and events. The project is a key component of the wider city centre strategy and investment programme.
Councillor Gordon Pryde, vice convener of the area committee, welcomed the announcement: "This is great news for Dunfermline. Bruce Square will give people a new space to enjoy in the city centre and it shows that real progress is happening. I’m pleased that young people helped shape this decision; their views have guided this important project."
In addition to the naming, the committee has approved a £30,000 investment to investigate preliminary concepts for improving other public spaces. This funding is intended to explore methods for making urban areas more accessible and easier to navigate for residents and visitors alike.
Cllr Pryde added: "The £30,000 agreed today will help important early work move forward and will support better public spaces. This investment will help us plan for a stronger and more vibrant Dunfermline."
