Work has officially started on a major £12m upgrade to the electrical network in the Peterhead area today, Monday 30 March. The project, delivered in collaboration with contractors Brush Group, aims to strengthen the reliability of energy supplies for local homes and businesses.
The scope of the work involves upgrading the underground cable network along the A90, stretching between Peterhead Power Station in the south to the St Fergus Gas Terminal in the north.
Construction will largely take place within public highways, as well as on adjacent verges and footpaths. To ensure the safety of the public and site teams, temporary traffic management will be implemented in stages. SSEN Distribution has coordinated with Amey and Aberdeenshire Council to develop a plan that minimises disruption, featuring two teams working simultaneously from Peterhead substation and St Fergus toward Balmoor Bridge.
While the project is scheduled to continue until Autumn 2027, traffic management will be limited to sections of approximately 600 metres at a time, utilising 24-hour traffic signals. On a specific portion of the route, these works will coincide with the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) project, a joint venture between SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission.
SSEN Distribution's Project Manager, Ryan McRobbie, said: "Safety is our number one priority at all times, and so over the course of the project we're going to have a rolling programme of traffic management to make sure road-users and teams on site stay safe. We appreciate that any work on the public highways can have an impact on people's day-to-day journeys and routines, and we'd like to thank road-users for their patience and understanding during this essential work."
