The Avenue Screen (the Arches) is set for further restoration after its render was replaced in 2019. Additional maintenance is now required to resolve a number of issues and reinstate the surface finish of the newer harling.
Specialist contractor Andrew Bradley Stonemason has been appointed to undertake the conservation and repairs. The project is supported by £120,000 from Crown Estate funding, approved by the Council.
Scaffolding will be erected within the first two weeks. Once in place, the team will carry out a masonry inspection, install new leadwork capping and repair the harling. The structure will then be left to dry for several weeks before a full repaint of the Screen is completed.
Activity is expected to continue across the summer months until August. Throughout the programme, every effort will be made to keep disruption for neighbouring properties and the wider community to a minimum.
Councillor Math Campbell Sturgess, Policy Lead for Business Development, said: "It is important that that we get this piece of work right. The Avenue Screen is an iconic piece of Inveraray's built heritage. It plays a major role in the town's highly original and recognisable frontage and that has to be preserved for the community and for the thousands of visitors that pass through its gates."
