Morrison Construction's Building Central division has been selected by Midlothian Council to deliver a substantial overhaul and expansion of Penicuik High School.

The project will sensitively refurbish the original 1930s school while adding a new three-storey wing to replace the existing 1960s block, creating a modern and adaptable learning environment that retains the site's heritage.

At the heart of the design is a new internal hub, repurposing the former assembly hall and courtyard areas into enclosed, multi-use spaces for dining, sport and events. Once finished, the school will accommodate up to 945 pupils, include specialist provision for Additional Support Needs, and provide facilities accessible to the wider community.

Preparatory works have begun, with the main construction programme due to start in summer 2026. The new building is expected to open in spring 2028, after which the 1960s block will be demolished and the surrounding grounds redeveloped.

Midlothian Council Cabinet Member for Education, Ellen Scott, said: "Appointing the main contractor is a major step forward for the Penicuik High School project and for the whole community.
