The JR Group Begins Work On Haghill Primary Redevelopment

The JR Group has begun construction on a landmark redevelopment in Glasgow's East End for Milnbank Housing Association, marking the firm's first collaboration with the Glasgow-based social housing provider.

The scheme on the site of the former Haghill Primary School will deliver 48 new homes while safeguarding the heritage of the century-old local landmark.

Plans comprise a full restoration of the original Janitor's House, four new townhouses, and a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom flats across three purpose-built apartment blocks.

Built in 1904 and closed in 2002, the school's legacy will be retained through a design that incorporates a significant portion of the original structure. A centrepiece of the project will be the reconstruction of the school's central façade.

Other historic elements salvaged during demolition will be reinstated, including the ornate entrance arches, original gate pillars forming new access points, the carved stone "Boys" and "Girls" playground signs, and large stretches of the boundary walls and railings. Together, these features aim to create modern, energy-efficient homes that remain faithful to the site's past.

Gary McGregor, Managing Director for The JR Group, said: "This is an incredibly exciting project for us as our first project in partnership with Milnbank Housing Association, and one that blends significant historical restoration with modern construction on a large scale.

"We are proud to be delivering high-quality homes that honour the heritage of this landmark building while creating a sustainable future for the community."

The redevelopment opens a new chapter for the Haghill site and will contribute to meeting housing needs across Glasgow's East End.

Allan Scott, Chairman of Milnbank Housing Association, said: "We are delighted to see this development finally begin on the former Haghill Primary School site. These homes will help address significant housing supply issues in the local area and will help meet a wide range of housing needs."

Construction is under way, with completion expected in 2027.
