Key Milestone In Construction of St Stephen's Community Hub

Work on the new St Stephen's Community Hub in Coatbridge is advancing steadily, with the project remaining on schedule for completion later this year.

Part of North Lanarkshire Council's Town and Community Hub Programme, the modern facility is designed to serve as an inclusive space for pupils, their families, and the broader local community.

Council Leader Jim Logue and Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families, recently visited the site to inspect the progress of the £34 million development. The landmark structure has seen significant recent growth, with the steel frame now fully in place alongside substantial progress on the roof and external brickwork. Internally, the installation of partitions is moving forward, shaping the final layout of the learning and community areas.

The project remains on track for a formal handover planned for late 2026. Once the St Stephen's pupils have transitioned into the new hub, the existing Sikeside Primary School building is scheduled for demolition to provide space for additional parking.

Councillor Jim Logue said: "It's fantastic to see the scale of progress being made at St Stephen's. This development represents a major investment in the future: the new hub will not only provide first-class learning facilities but will also create a vibrant space for the wider community."

The hub has been designed with a focus on flexibility, offering state-of-the-art educational environments and versatile spaces for use by local partners and community groups.

Councillor Michael McBride added: "Projects like this are about much more than bricks and mortar. They're about opportunity, inclusion and creating a shared community asset that everyone can be proud of. Seeing the steel frame and structure now in place really shows how quickly this is moving forward."

The development is one of four major construction projects currently being delivered under North Lanarkshire's hub programme, which also includes the St Kevin's Community Hub, Gartcosh Community Hub, and an extension to Chryston High School.

Beyond the physical infrastructure, the programme is providing community benefits through the creation of local jobs, apprenticeships, and training placements. Students from nearby schools, including St Andrews High School, are also engaging with the project through site visits and career events aimed at encouraging interest in the construction industry.
