MKM Building Supplies is set to open its 142nd branch at Edinburgh Fort Kinnaird on Monday 9 March 2026. The launch of the new site creates 17 new jobs for the local community and marks a continuation of the company's significant growth across the UK throughout the year.
The branch will be managed by Branch Directors James Douglas and Scott Fowler, who possess a combined 60 years of experience in timber, joinery, kitchens, and building materials. Both directors live on the outskirts of Edinburgh and have expressed pride in establishing a dedicated independent merchant within the city.
James Douglas, who has held senior positions with Magnet, Howdens, MGM Timber, and Travis Perkins, highlighted the strategic importance of the location: "Edinburgh is a brilliant place to work and live. It's got history, character and a busy trade scene. There's also a huge amount of building work going on across the city. Opening a proper independent merchant here is a great opportunity."
He further added: "Fort Kinnaird is a fantastic location. We're right next to one of Scotland's biggest retail outlets and just off the bypass, so it's easy for trades coming in and out of the city. Accessibility matters and we think this site gives us a real advantage."
The facility is designed as a "one-stop shop," stocking a comprehensive range of products including plumbing and heating supplies, landscaping materials, insulation, and plasterboard. It also features a kitchen and bathroom showroom. The branch will supply major brands such as Kingspan, Marshalls, Siniat, James Jones Timber, Global Stone, Superglass, and Symphony.
Scott Fowler, who brings 26 years of industry experience, commented on the team's local expertise: "What excited us about MKM is the freedom to build the branch the right way. We've recruited a strong team, we know the local market, and we can shape the offer around what customers actually need. The aim is simple. Build the best builders' merchant in Edinburgh."
He continued: "Local knowledge counts for a lot. We know the jobs happening around the city and the products customers rely on. That helps us get the stock profile right from day one. The approach is simple. Look after customers and everything else follows. I always say the same three things. Service, price and communication. If you get those right and treat people properly, customers come back."
MKM Edinburgh Fort Kinnaird will offer trade customers next-day delivery, with options for same-day and Saturday delivery where possible.
Beyond trade services, the branch has committed to supporting the local community. Partnerships are already planned with the Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity, The Ridge Foundation, and the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home.
Scott summed up the launch: "We're really looking forward to opening the doors. Good people, good stock and a branch that's here to help the local trade get the job done."
