As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, Highland-based contractor Pat Munro is highlighting the achievements of team member Mateusz Szulc. Having joined the company in June 2023, Mateusz has successfully completed his Modern Apprenticeship in Construction & Civil Engineering Operations.
The training programme involved a combination of practical site experience and technical instruction at the National Construction College Scotland in Renfrew. During his three-year journey, Mateusz developed a variety of industry skills, citing the Mountrich Watermain Project as a particular highlight. This project involved working in chambers as part of a contractor-led renewal of the watermain system, providing essential experience in utility infrastructure.
Now working as a qualified Ground Worker, his daily responsibilities range from concreting to joinery tasks across various sites. In addition to technical skills, the apprenticeship emphasised the importance of on-site safety and provided a foundation for machinery training, which Mateusz intends to expand upon in the future.
Reflecting on his career choice, Mateusz Szulc said: "After leaving school and planning the first steps of my career, I knew one thing for certain: I wanted a practical role. This job provided new skills and experience and was a great learning opportunity. Working out in either the cold or the warm weather, I enjoy it. Being able to carry out work safely and being trained on machinery is a key part of the job, and I'm looking forward to learning more so I can carry out different jobs in the future. It's a great way to earn while you learn, and you'll gain a valuable trade in a safe and supportive environment."
His progress has been welcomed by his mentors and management. Calum Urquhart, Line Manager at Pat Munro, praised the new qualification: "Mateusz has worked well throughout his Apprenticeship and has gained a lot of skills from the workforce college and different work environments. We're delighted to have him as part of our team."
The success story serves to promote the benefits of apprenticeships as a viable and rewarding career pathway within the Scottish construction and civil engineering sectors.
