Work on 17 new council homes in Newton Mearns is well under way, with East Renfrewshire Council expecting to hand over keys this autumn.

The scheme on Barrhead Road, delivered by CCG (Scotland) and designed by MAST Architects, comprises four one-bedroom cottage flats, 12 two-bedroom flats and a single two-bedroom bungalow.

Three of the properties will be wheelchair adaptable, and all homes are being constructed with level access to meet a wide range of tenant needs.

The development represents an investment of more than £4.3 million, including £1.9 million from the Scottish Government, alongside developer contributions and East Renfrewshire Council's own capital funding.

CCG is using offsite Modern Methods of Construction, featuring its enhanced closed-panel 'iQ' Timber System and factory-fitted windows and doors. The company's in-house teams are also installing utilities, renewables and plumbing to streamline delivery.

High levels of airtightness will improve thermal performance, helping to keep energy use down and homes warm and comfortable. Zero-emissions heating will be provided via an air source heat pump in the bungalow and exhaust air source heat pumps in the flats, supplemented by rooftop solar panels generating renewable electricity.

East Renfrewshire Council housing and environment convener, Councillor Danny Devlin, said: "It was great to visit the site and see the progress that has been made. Having declared the local housing emergency last year, we know that more people than ever need a permanent place to call home, so it's extremely important that we do all we can to create more social housing in the area and tackle the issues we're facing."

A spokesperson for CCG (Scotland) added: "Our method of construction is among the most advanced seen anywhere in the UK. Using an approach known as offsite, we fabricate entire wall zones – complete with windows and doors, insulation and internal linings – at our semi-automated facility in Cambuslang before erecting them into position onsite. This enables higher quality standards and faster delivery, as demonstrated by the strong progress at Barrhead Road. Our wider in-house divisions will now be deployed to build out the development, which we look forward to completing later this year."

Since work began, CCG has delivered a range of community benefits, including two new jobs, two work placements and a plumbing trade apprenticeship for Harry Houston, who joined the firm last year. The company is also running careers events with schools across the region.
