Dundee City Council has confirmed that construction of the new primary school for the Western Gateway area is taking a significant step forward as preparatory survey works commence at Newmill of Gray.
The project is a collaborative effort between the local authority and housing developer Barratt Homes to deliver a much-needed educational resource for the expanding community. The new school is currently anticipated to open in August 2029, with a total budget of £25 million allocated within the council's Capital Plan 2025-2030.
To facilitate delivery, the council is utilising a single-supplier national framework procurement route. Robertson Construction has been appointed as the lead contractor for the build. A dedicated project board will be established to lead stakeholder engagement, while the council prepares to submit a formal planning application for the campus.
City Growth and Infrastructure convener, Cllr Steven Rome, said: "The council has been working hard to deliver a primary school for the Western Gateway. It has been important to liaise closely with the developer to coordinate delivery of the housing development and the primary school.
"I am pleased at the continued progress which is being made on this project. The council has allocated £25 million to the school in its capital plan, and that illustrates how committed we are to this hugely important development for the Western Gateway. I look forward to the new school taking shape and becoming a real focus of community life for the future."
The development follows a period of coordination to align the school's construction with the wider residential expansion in Dundee West.
A representative from Barratt & David Wilson Homes added: "We are pleased to confirm that work on our two Dundee West developments will be commencing shortly. We continue to work closely with Dundee City Council to support the delivery of the proposed new school, which will provide an important educational resource and become a valued part of the Western Gateway community.
"We remain committed to engaging with the Council and local stakeholders as the project progresses, and to ensuring that the development contributes positively and sustainably to the local area."
