Amey, working for Transport Scotland, is progressing a major programme of bridge refurbishment on the M8 at Junction 26 (Hillington Interchange).

The £9 million scheme, running across five phases from September 2025 to spring 2026, delivers extensive repairs and upgrades to four key bridge structures, including vehicle parapets, structural waterproofing, safety barriers and carriageway surfacing.

Phase Four will operate from Friday 13 February until Sunday 8 March 2026 under a 2+2 contraflow. Overnight (8pm to 6am) closures of the M8 Junction 26 eastbound on-slip will continue throughout this phase, alongside overnight closures of the M8 Junction 26 westbound off-slip and the Junction 25A westbound off-slip.

Diversions will be as follows:

- North of Hillington Interchange (Renfrew/Braehead): traffic seeking the Junction 26 on-slip should circulate Hillington Interchange, then use Renfrew Road, Shieldhall Road and Helen Street to join the M8 eastbound at Junction 24 (Helen Street Interchange).

- South of Hillington Interchange (Hillington Industrial Estate): traffic should follow Hillington Road to Paisley Road West, then Helen Street, and join the M8 eastbound via the Junction 24 on-slip.

For eight nights (25 February to 5 March), Junctions 25A and 26 will close at the same time, together with a closure of the westbound carriageway. During this period, the secondary westbound carriageway will also be closed with the following diversion:

- M8 secondary carriageway traffic: leave the M8 westbound at Junction 23, follow Paisley Road West to Hillington Interchange, where the diversion ends and vehicles rejoin the M8.

The contraflow lane will remain open for all westbound traffic. The Junction 24 and Junction 25 westbound off-slips will stay open; however, both on-slips will close, as will the Junction 25A and Junction 26 westbound off-slips. When the Junction 24 and Junction 25 on-slips are closed, vehicles should use the same Paisley Road West diversion to access the M8 westbound. During closures of the Junction 25A and Junction 26 westbound off-slips, traffic will be diverted as follows:

- M8 Junction 26 westbound off-slip: continue to the M8 westbound Junction 27 off-slip, take the fourth exit at the roundabout and follow Renfrew Road northbound to the next roundabout to join the M8 eastbound, then exit to rejoin the M8 westbound.

- M8 Junction 25A westbound off-slip: continue on the M8 westbound and exit via the Junction 26 off-slip to Hillington Interchange. Turn right onto Hillington Road, then take King's Inch Road and turn right onto Old Govan Road to the end of the diversion. If Junction 26 is closed at the same time, follow the diversion above for the Junction 26 westbound off-slip closure.

A 40mph temporary speed limit, enforced by average speed cameras, will be in place throughout to protect both the workforce and road users, with construction operating 24/7. Further overnight closures will be required for traffic management set-up and changes, with advance notifications provided on swtrunkroads.scot. Recovery vehicles will be on standby.

The scheme has been developed in consultation with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, the emergency services, Renfrewshire Council, Glasgow City Council, West Dunbartonshire Council and Braehead Shopping Centre.

All works are weather dependent and may be postponed or rescheduled in unfavourable conditions.
