Moray Council will this week submit an application for Listed Building Consent to remove the two failed sections of the Garmouth (Spey) Viaduct following its partial collapse.

The proposal sets out a plan to dismantle the failed sections into smaller components to enable a more controlled and safer removal than attempting to take out the spans in one piece. This follows the Full Council's agreement on the next steps for the bridge on 28 January 2026.

The detailed methodology will be finalised once a contractor is appointed and can carry out further assessment. Submitting the application now, based on the most likely approach, is intended to speed up progress, although the method could change once the contractor confirms its plan.

Separately, the council will begin vegetation clearance along Stynie Road, between Mosstodloch and Garmouth, from Monday 16 February for up to three weeks. The works will support temporary diversion routes for walkers and cyclists and involve trimming roadside vegetation on verges and along fence lines to improve visibility and road width.

The measures anticipate increased walking and cycling following the viaduct's closure. After the initial clearance, growth will be monitored throughout the year, with any further cutting scheduled after the bird nesting season to ensure compliance with environmental guidance.

Moray Council remains committed to carrying out all works related to the viaduct sensitively and in line with its listed status, while prioritising public safety and the long-term stewardship of the structure.
