The transformation of Aurs Road, the principal route between Barrhead and Newton Mearns, is moving into its final stages.

The council has confirmed the road will reopen on Friday 29 May 2026, with works advancing on a safer road layout, a dedicated active travel route, a waterside promenade offering far-reaching views across the reservoir, and a new car park.

As the scheme nears completion, the Council continues to work closely with contractors and Scottish Water to finish the remaining elements.

Final surfacing is under way, alongside structural works to the dam, relocation of high voltage cables and construction of the promenade. Landscaping, the installation of benches and wider public realm improvements are also progressing well.

The programme has faced challenges, with timescales affected by ground conditions, the need to move unmapped utilities, excavation of a former water works structure, and an area of subsidence that required part of the scheme to be redesigned.

Councillor Owen O'Donnell, Leader of East Renfrewshire Council, said: "We appreciate the patience of all our residents throughout these works and recognise that they have been disruptive. I'm pleased that this major project is nearing completion and that we have a confirmed completion date. While it's taken longer than expected, these improvements will be worthwhile in the long-term, providing better transport links and an impressive waterside promenade to benefit local communities. We're confident that the road will be open by 29 May, unless any extreme weather conditions arise in the coming months."

The Aurs Road project forms part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal, a £1billion partnership between eight local authorities, the Scottish Government and the UK Government. To date, the City Deal has delivered over £550 million in local infrastructure investment across the eight council areas and is estimated to have attracted more than £880 million in follow-on investment since its launch in 2014.
