BEAR Scotland has progressed the second phase of refurbishment at Inchbae Bridge on the A835, building on structural repairs completed last year. This stage focused on the bridge deck, which was fully exposed and re-waterproofed to enhance long-term durability.

During planning, the aim was to maintain traffic on the A835 to minimise disruption. However, the bridge's narrow and off-centre carriageway presented a significant challenge that would typically require a full closure to complete the works safely.

To address this, a package of enabling works was carried out in advance. This included widening the carriageway on the approach to the bridge by infilling the soft verge on the left-hand side to create a suitable running surface, allowing the road to remain open and reducing overall impact on road users.

This phase complements the extensive concrete repairs undertaken beneath the structure in 2024. Together, the two stages amount to a near-complete refurbishment above and below deck, including elements not visible to drivers but crucial to the bridge's long-term integrity.

Only minor finishing activities remain, with the installation of road studs required to fully complete the scheme.

BEAR Scotland thanked everyone involved in delivering both phases of this challenging project and said Inchbae Bridge is now in excellent condition and well prepared to serve the network for many years ahead.
