SGN has marked National Apprenticeship Week by underlining its drive to train the next generation of engineers who will support a secure, lower‑carbon gas network, while spotlighting the contribution apprentices make across the UK energy system.

Throughout the week, the company is sharing stories from across its operations to showcase the passion and talent of its emerging workforce, alongside its ongoing focus on skills, safety and innovation.

The activity follows the recent opening of SGN's National Training Centre for Scotland, a modern, dedicated facility providing technical, practical and accessible learning.

SGN says the centre will be pivotal in equipping apprentices and experienced engineers with the capabilities needed for the UK's evolving energy landscape, including the transition to low‑carbon technologies.

In a video message for NAW, Chief Operating Officer Darren Elsom said: "We've got a new national training centre in Scotland that's providing real hands-on experience from our trainers, who are SGN people. They've got 30-40 years' experience and they are passing that onto new apprentices joining the industry. They are getting the very best training before they are then out on the patch delivering for our customers."

SGN partners with East Sussex College Group and Fife College to deliver comprehensive training programmes that combine classroom learning with hands‑on experience, industry‑leading instruction and clear routes into long‑term engineering careers.

Between 2026 and 2031, the network operator plans to recruit and train more than 50 apprentices each year to strengthen the sector's skills pipeline and deliver greater value for customers.

The company's approach has also been recognised through gold membership of The 5% Club's 2025–26 Employer Audit Scheme, achieved last year just 12 months after joining. The accreditation acknowledges its commitment to 'earn and learn' pathways including apprenticeships, graduate programmes and traineeships.
