Multi-Million Pound Investment To Modernise Inverclyde Rail Infrastructure

Network Rail has begun a £4 million programme of infrastructure upgrade works in Inverclyde.

Over an eight-day period, engineering teams will carry out a series of critical structural reinforcements, bridge deck renewals, and steelwork repairs designed to enhance the long-term reliability of the route.

The extensive programme focuses on several key locations to ensure the infrastructure can meet future demands. In Greenock, engineers will repair and replace sections of the railway's supporting walls, incorporating new concrete segments. Significant work is also scheduled for the River Gryffe Bridge, where the main deck will be replaced and the supporting steelwork strengthened.

Further improvements include steel repairs at Houston Road in Georgetown and comprehensive maintenance at Station Road in Langbank. The Langbank works will involve fixing the steel structure beneath the bridge and upgrading a portion of the station platform with modern, long-lasting materials.

Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail Scotland, commented: "Delivering a safe, reliable railway for the communities we serve is always our priority. The work beginning this week on the Inverclyde line is vital to strengthening the resilience of the route. These improvements will help ensure passengers can continue to depend on this line for many years to come."

Moran added: "By bringing several essential projects together into a single planned closure, we're minimising the overall disruption and avoiding the need for repeated downtime further down the line. I want to thank passengers and local residents for their understanding and patience while our teams carry out these important upgrades."

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, stated: "While Network Rail carries out these vital improvements on the Inverclyde line, our focus is on keeping customers moving as smoothly and reliably as possible. We have a rail replacement plan in place to help people continue to travel with confidence, and we'd encourage customers to plan ahead and check their journey using the ScotRail website or app. This work represents an important investment in the future of the route, and we appreciate our customers' patience and understanding while they're delivered."

In addition to the structural upgrades, Network Rail is continuing a separate £2.5m vegetation management programme that has been underway since July 2025. This project, delivered by QTS, involves the strategic clearing of trees and plants along the line to prevent interference with rail operations.
