Ofgem Grants Licence To ScottishPower's New Sphere Energy Connect Business

Construction News Image

ScottishPower has officially entered the Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) market following the approval of an electricity distribution licence by the energy regulator, Ofgem. The new business, operating as Sphere Energy Connect, is authorised to design, own, and operate localised electricity networks throughout Great Britain without geographical restriction.

Sphere Energy Connect will focus specifically on the "last mile" of the electricity network—the final infrastructure required to deliver power safely and directly from the main grid to the end consumer. The business aims to provide sustainable and smart solutions for a variety of new developments, ensuring that homes and businesses are connected efficiently to existing national infrastructure.

To facilitate this growth, Sphere will collaborate with several key industry partners, including:

• Independent Connection Providers (ICPs)

• Property Developers

• Charge Point Operators (CPOs)

While Sphere Energy Connect is part of the ScottishPower group, it will operate independently from the group's existing distribution network arms, SP Energy Networks and SP Electricity North West.

Helen Fairlie, Director of ScottishPower's Sphere Energy Connect, commented:

"Sphere is all about connecting people and powering progress. As part of ScottishPower, Sphere seamlessly blends the agility and innovation of a start up with the strength and reputation of a trusted business. Our decades of experience and understanding of the complexities of the energy landscape mean we are perfectly positioned to support our customers, embrace smarter ways of working and collaborate effectively to deliver the best possible projects. We're passionate about helping the UK achieve its climate ambitions and excited for Sphere Energy Connect to play its part in driving a cleaner and greener future."

The launch of the business comes as the UK continues to expand its grid capacity to meet increasing demand for clean energy and electric vehicle infrastructure.
