JR Scaffold Services, a leading Scottish scaffolding provider, has completed a bespoke installation to facilitate the urgent renovation of St Fillan's Church in Houston.
As the oldest church in the Diocese of Paisley, the landmark building is currently undergoing a significant roofing project to preserve its structural integrity.
To ensure the restoration could proceed despite the challenging winter weather, the JR Scaffold team erected a custom-designed structure that allowed for the complete removal and replacement of the building's original slating. The installation process was completed over a two-week period, overseen by Contracts Director John Jack and Temporary Roof Advisor Owen Stoney, supported by a team of three specialist scaffolders.
The project required a sophisticated design by Gallery Access Solutions to overcome significant site constraints. By combining Cuplok scaffolding with Altrad Dessa's Uni Roof system, the team successfully constructed the framework at roof level. This approach was essential due to the restricted ground space surrounding the 1841-listed building.
Positioned prominently at the entrance of the Renfrewshire village, the church sits in close proximity to a main road. JR Scaffold Services coordinated extensively with designers to ensure the structure complied with all pavement and road regulations. Furthermore, the team integrated specialized beam work to navigate limited access at the rear of the property.
Temporary Roof Advisor, Owen Stoney said: "This was an exciting and complex project to be involved with, as it allowed us to showcase our adaptability and expertise for our client, ensuring that the required scaffolding was erected around the old, iconic building."
He added: "We worked closely with the designers to ensure that everything was set up in a way that provided access for restorations to happen safely for both those working on the church and those using the pavements and roads surrounding the site."
