Drax Launches Digital Tool To Track Biomass Supply Chain

Drax has officially introduced its Biomass Tracker, a new digital platform designed to offer comprehensive transparency regarding the journey of its woody biomass.

The tool tracks the supply chain from its origin to Drax Power Station or to various third-party customers.

The interactive interface provides users with specific data on the geographical locations where Drax sources its materials, the types of wood fibre utilised, and the methods of transport employed. Crucially, the tracker also calculates and displays the carbon emissions associated with every stage of the journey. To ensure further accountability, the tool incorporates data on independent sustainability certifications.

Utilising real-world data updated on a quarterly basis, the tracker employs a Sankey diagram to visualise the flow of materials. This allows stakeholders to explore the process from fibre origin and pelletising through to storage and final use.

Miguel Veiga-Pestana, Chief Sustainability Officer at Drax, commented: "The Biomass Tracker is another important step for Drax in delivering on our Sustainability Framework commitments. Transparency and data-led reporting are essential to building trust and confidence in sustainable biomass."

He added: "By showing where our biomass comes from and how it moves through our supply chain, we are showing through openness and accountability, that biomass can be sustainably sourced, to support the UK's energy security."

The launch aligns with the Sustainability Framework Drax established in February 2025. It represents a significant push towards using digital innovation to verify responsible sourcing and enhance sustainability reporting within the renewable energy sector.

The Biomass Tracker is currently live on the Drax website. The company has stated that it intends to continuously improve the tool by adding new data sets and enhanced functionality in future updates.
