SSE Secures 1.4GW CfD For Berwick Bank Phase B

SSE has been awarded a 20-year Contracts for Difference (CfD) for 1.4GW of low-carbon power from Phase B of its Berwick Bank Wind Farm.

Announced on Wednesday 14 January 2026, as part of the UK's seventh allocation round (AR7), the contract marks Berwick Bank B as the only successful fixed-bottom offshore wind project in Scotland to secure an award in this round.

The agreement guarantees a strike price of £89.49/MWh for 1,380MW of capacity. This figure is based on 2024 prices and will be indexed annually for CPI inflation throughout the 20-year term. The award follows the Scottish Government's July 2025 decision to grant a consent order for the full offshore wind farm array.

Located 38km off the coast of the Scottish Borders in the outer Firth of Forth, the total Berwick Bank development is split into three phases (A, B, and C) with a combined target capacity of 4.1GW. With Phase B now secured, SSE intends to enter the remaining two phases into future auction rounds, including the eighth allocation round scheduled for later this year.

The scale of the project is significant for the Scottish construction and energy sectors:

- It could increase Scotland's renewable capacity by nearly 25%.

- It is expected to support over 9,000 UK jobs.

- It represents a potential investment of approximately £8 billion into the UK economy.

Martin Pibworth, Chief Executive of SSE plc, commented: "We are delighted Berwick Bank B has been successful in AR7 and has secured a CfD for 1.4GW of essential new low-carbon power for the UK at a competitive price for consumers. This milestone enables us to advance the project towards a final investment decision and reinforces our commitment at SSE to delivering sustainable growth and long-term value for society, for consumers and for our shareholders.

"If built to its full projected capacity of more than 4GW, Berwick Bank Wind Farm can rank among the largest offshore wind projects globally. It would represent the single most significant contribution toward achieving the Scottish and UK Governments' offshore wind targets and can accelerate the delivery of homegrown, affordable, and secure clean energy to UK consumers from excellent Scottish offshore wind resources."

SSE will now move Phase B toward a final investment decision, which is anticipated in 2027, subject to the company's internal investment criteria and hurdle rates.
