SSEN Transmission has formally commenced early enabling works on its Spittal to Peterhead subsea cable link, a flagship project intended to bolster Scotland's power network and speed the shift to a low‑carbon energy system.

A groundbreaking event held last month at Nicol of Skene's offices in Aberdeen brought together key delivery partners NKT, Nicol of Skene, and John Gunn & Sons to mark the start of activity on the major infrastructure scheme.

The 203 km high‑voltage direct current (HVDC) link, rated at 2 GW, will connect the recently consented Banniskirk Hub in Caithness with the Netherton Hub in Aberdeenshire. Of the total length, 166 km will run subsea from Sinclair's Bay in Caithness across the Moray Firth to Rattray Head near Peterhead.

All consenting decisions are now in place for the Spittal to Peterhead subsea link. Once complete, it will provide a robust route to transport renewable generation from Scotland's north to demand centres across the country, supporting the UK's aim of a predominantly clean power system by 2030. This milestone follows November's award of a marine licence by the Scottish Government Marine Directorate, opening up significant opportunities for businesses and supply chains across the north of Scotland.

Local businesses sit at the heart of delivery. Contracts have been awarded to John Gunn & Sons in Caithness and Nicol of Skene in Aberdeen to construct the onshore cable sections at Spittal and Peterhead respectively. Global cable manufacturer NKT has signed a framework agreement with SSEN Transmission, and both parties have agreed to proceed with initial works for the HVDC link under that framework.

On the ground, construction has started on access roads and bell‑mouth junctions near the land cable route in Peterhead, with similar activity at the Caithness land cable section due later this month. In November, SSEN Transmission also became the first business to sign the Highland Council's Highland Social Value Charter (HSVC), reinforcing its commitment to ensure major projects deliver jobs, skills and wider socio‑economic benefits for local communities.
