North Lanarkshire Council has granted planning approval for the delivery of 48 new affordable homes at Ravenscraig, marking another significant phase in the transformation of the former steelworks.
The project, a collaborative submission by McTaggart Construction, North Lanarkshire Council, and Ravenscraig Limited, will be situated on Prospecthill Road. The development is designed to feature three residential blocks comprising a mix of one- and two-bedroom flats. The site plan also incorporates dedicated resident parking and professionally landscaped open spaces to integrate with the existing community.
As one of the largest regeneration initiatives in Europe, Ravenscraig has already seen the completion of over 1,000 homes. This latest approval follows a period of intense activity across the site, including a £12m industrial scheme by Fusion Assets Ltd and a new vehicle workshop for Motus Commercials. Furthermore, ambitious proposals are currently being progressed by Apatura for a £3.9 billion green AI data campus which could bring thousands of jobs to the area.
Russell Wilkie, Director at Ravenscraig Limited, commented: "Providing high-quality, affordable homes is central to our vision for Ravenscraig. Over the past year, we've made significant progress in delivering the masterplan, and the approval of 48 new affordable homes is another important milestone in creating a vibrant, sustainable community. Our ambition is to build a truly self-sufficient place where people not only have high-quality homes, but also easy access to the services, amenities, and opportunities they need to thrive."
Janice Russell, Director at McTaggart Construction, added: "We're delighted to get the green light for these 48 affordable homes at Ravenscraig. In the midst of Scotland's housing crisis, every affordable home counts, and this development addresses a critical need in the local community. We're committed to delivering quality homes that will serve families here for years to come, and it's another solid step forward in building out this important regeneration site."
The Prospecthill Road scheme also aligns with wider infrastructure improvements, including a new access road funded via the City Deal.
Councillor Michael McPake, Convener of Housing at North Lanarkshire Council, stated: "We welcome this latest planning approval for new homes at Ravenscraig, which will support our commitment to deliver 6,000 new council homes by 2035. The Prospecthill Road development will provide much-needed affordable housing and support the wider regeneration of Ravenscraig, including the planned new access road, funded through City Deal and the council, to enable future development and create opportunities for local people."
