Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution has announced a new long-term flexibility auction, scheduled to open on Monday 12 January 2026.
The move marks a further expansion of the operator's presence in flexibility service markets as it manages the evolving demands on the electrical grid.
Having already secured over 934 MW of flexibility during the initial phase of the current ED2 price control period, SSEN is now seeking an additional 46 MW. This latest market window will remain open until 26 January 2026, covering 101 distinct areas across both its northern and southern network regions.
Flexibility services allow the grid to manage constraints by shifting the timing and location of electricity consumption and generation. This capability is becoming increasingly vital as the industry integrates low-carbon technologies such as heat pumps, solar panels, battery storage, and electric vehicles. These "smart-grid" solutions are essential for decarbonising the economy while ensuring network stability.
