SSEN Transmission has officially opened its second state-of-the-art operations warehouse, a £17 million facility strategically located in Dundee’s Claverhouse East Industrial Estate.

The success of this new hub is expected to mirror its sister site in Inverness, as it is designed to significantly strengthen the resilience and operational efficiency of the high-voltage electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland.

The expansive 7,500 square metre warehouse—comparable in size to the V&A Dundee—was constructed by Beauly-based firm Global Infrastructure (Scotland) Ltd. The facility is equipped with heavy lifting capabilities, advanced storage systems, and enhanced security and monitoring technologies. Its strategic positioning will allow it to play a vital role in maintaining operational continuity and supporting Scotland’s critical clean energy ambitions, particularly in the southern portion of SSEN Transmission's network.

Adding a unique and sustainable feature to the site is a striking sculpture commissioned as a condition of the site's planning consent. Designed by artist Ailsa Magnus, the installation features two large, intertwining dandelions crafted entirely from repurposed glass insulators once used across the transmission network. Located at the front of the building, the piece celebrates the transformation of Scotland’s energy infrastructure by symbolically linking nature and human engineering.

John Baillie, Lead Project Manager at SSEN Transmission, commented that the opening marks another milestone in building a robust and future-ready network, praising the brilliant collaboration with Global Infrastructure.

Mark Fleming, Construction Director for Global Infrastructure, highlighted that the company engaged over 20 subcontractors and that approximately 350 individuals worked to bring the facility to life, delivering it to the highest standards of safety and quality. The completion of the Dundee facility, following the Dalcross (Inverness) project earlier this year, showcases the firm’s capability to deliver major infrastructure projects across Scotland.

The new warehouse is part of SSEN Transmission’s wider £22 billion Pathway to 2030 programme, an initiative aimed at expanding and modernising the north of Scotland’s electricity transmission network to support thousands of jobs, deliver community benefits, and help achieve net-zero targets. The combined strength of the Inverness and Dundee warehouses forms a strategic logistical backbone for maintaining network reliability.
