Landsec, the owner of Buchanan Galleries, has received planning application approval from Glasgow City Council for the comprehensive refurbishment and enhancement of the centre.
With this endorsement, Landsec plans to commence the first wave of investment in the second half of 2026.
The redevelopment will be delivered in phases, ensuring that Buchanan Galleries remains open and vibrant for shoppers and visitors throughout the works.
Charlie Griffiths, Asset Management Director at Landsec, confirmed the approval, stating: "Our proposal reflects the community call for better retail and leisure, demonstrates our confidence in Glasgow and is aligned to the Council's vision to deliver economic growth and improvement to the city centre."
Early improvements to the retail centre and the surrounding area will include:
• Comprehensive modernisation of the existing mall.
• Creation of more ‘high street' retail frontage to strengthen the connection to Buchanan Street.
• Development of spaces for new leisure and dining concepts, including a destination food hall.
• Construction of an additional major retail unit on the gap site adjacent to the Galleries, designed to host a new flagship store.
Landsec also plans to future-proof retail innovation by incorporating modern digital art and advertising displays and lighting to support brands and promote civic activities. The investment will also add new, attractive, and accessible public spaces.
Glasgow City Council Leader, Councillor Susan Aitken, welcomed the news, stating the approved plans "will make a huge contribution" to the momentum building in the city centre, and that the renewed Galleries can be a "major catalyst" for the city centre's next chapter.
Landsec confirmed it is positively engaging with a range of local and international brands and looks forward to announcing new names and attractions in the coming months.
