Two major infrastructure projects for Peterhead have advanced this week following a meeting of Aberdeenshire Council, signaling a significant program of construction investment for the town.

Peterhead Community Campus

For the new Peterhead Community Campus, demolition work began this week on the existing pavilion and multi-use games area to clear the site ahead of construction. The new campus will provide a modern learning environment for 1,400 pupils on the playing fields off Kinmundy Road.

Construction, led by Hub North Scotland Ltd in partnership with Robertson Construction Eastern, is due to start in spring next year, subject to final planning approval.

Councillors also agreed that once the new campus opens in August 2028, demolition of the existing Academy site will commence. The existing leisure centre and theatre will be retained, receiving upgrades, and officers were asked to explore alternative uses for the sports hall and ancillary areas to maximise community use of the existing space.

Peterhead Cultural Quarter

Progress is also accelerating on the Cultural Quarter project, which involves two major building refurbishments:

• Arbuthnot House: Construction work is planned to start early next year. The historic building will be restored and extended to house the town's library and a new regional museum dedicated to showcasing Aberdeenshire's historical collections. The facility will also feature multi-purpose workshop spaces, a dedicated area for national temporary exhibitions, and a restaurant with harbour views.

• Carnegie Building: Restoration work continues to convert the existing building on St Peter Street into a new creative and cultural venue, with a lease for the new operator expected to be agreed shortly.

Provost of Aberdeenshire Cllr Judy Whyte expressed her satisfaction: "I am pleased that plans continue to push forward for the Peterhead community... The Levelling Up projects show another significant investment and will involve major refurbishment and extension works to Arbuthnot House."

Aberdeenshire Council co-leader Cllr Stewart Adams added: "The unprecedented, planned programme of project at Peterhead will deliver on [our ambition to deliver on Place]. We will invest significant sums to retain existing culture and leisure facilities in their current location, whilst undertaking essential works to the building services, building fabric, and structure."
